IGNOU Regional Centres

Ignou regional centers provide educational assistance, guidance and resources required for a wide range of programs, and ensure effective service for students in specific areas.

IGNOU Regional Networks 2025: Bridging Education Across Regions

At an IGNOU Regional Center, three main functions are performed: academic, administrative and campaign. These centres are vital in advancing the IGNOU Open University system by managing study centres, overseeing student support services, and conducting training programs for coordinators, counselors, and staff.

Serving as mini-offices of the University, Regional Centres handle daily operations and act as key resource hubs, ensuring smooth delivery of IGNOU’s services within their respective regions.

  • Which are the IGNOU Regional Centres?

IGNOU functions through a vast network comprising 56 Regional Centres (RCs) and 11 Recognized Regional Centres (RRCs). These RRCs include 6 dedicated to the Army, 4 to the Navy, and 1 for the Assam Rifles, ensuring tailored support for learners from various defense backgrounds. In addition, nearly 2,000 Learner Support Centres (LSCs) are located across the country.

This widespread network allows IGNOU admission services to learners in rural, remote, and underserved areas, including individuals facing social or physical challenges. It ensures access to flexible, cheap and higher high -quality education for everyone.

According to Section 2(J) of the IGNOU Act, a Regional Centre is set up or managed by the University to oversee and coordinate the activities of Study Centres within a specific region. These centres may also carry out additional duties as assigned by the Board of Management (BoM).

Furthermore, under Section 5(1)(XXVI) of the Act, IGNOU is empowered to grant autonomous status to a College or Regional Centre, in accordance with its rules and regulations.

IGNOU Establishment of Regional Centres (RCs)

Regional Centres, established in partnership with State Governments, serve a key role in strengthening the reach and impact of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in their designated regions. These centres are responsible for setting up, developing, managing, and supervising Learner Support Centres (LSCs), which facilitate program delivery, provide student support services, and conduct staff development activities.

The first Regional Centre of IGNOU was inaugurated in Delhi in the year 1985. Since then, the University has expanded its presence across the country with a robust network of 56 Regional Centres, covering every state and union territory. In addition, IGNOU operates 11 Recognized Regional Centres (RRCs) and nearly 2,000 Learner Support Centres (LSCs) nationwide.
